All about Modems and Routers
To be able to get your home computer or mobile devices connected to the internet, you will need a modem and a router which are its two major components. Communication with your internet service provider is made possible through the modem. It is called a cable modem if it connected to your cable provider through a coaxial cable. A DSL modem is connected to your telephone line. Your modem is dependent o the ISP’s infrastructure capability. Fiber of satellite could be the medium used.
If you have a router then you are able to share internet connection with other devices in your home or office. A wireless router creates a Wi-Fi network that devices can connect to. Sometime routers have ports for Ethernet cables. It is through the modem that the router connects devices to the internet. The recipient and owner of a single IP address on the internet which servers on the net can connect to is the router.
Firewalls or protective barricades against the internet come with routers. With the router firewall, it gives protection in hardware format, in addition to the software firewall found in your computer.
A combination of both router and modem are combined in one piece of equipment with ADSL devices.
With a few cosmetic differences, modem-router combos basically work the same way, whatever brand it is.
There is a wide range of modem-router combos to choose from and prices vary from less than fifty dollars up to a few hundred.
The DOCSIS 3.0 is the latest format for the standard modem for cable, if your service provider provides internet through cable network. For those with DSL connection, if your speed is great than 15 Mbps, the you would go for a VDSL connection and an ADSL connection for lesser speeds.
Routers are easier to choose. There are two types of technology in use. These two technologies are the beam forming technology which directs a beam at your device and the other is the radius Wi-Fi technology. This is better for new devices and old ones too work well on this technology. Speeds can range from 100 Mbsp to 5300 Mbps.
It is always better to buy a modem and router on your own rather than going for what your service provider is providing for a low rent. It is worth spending a few hundred dollars for a great difference in internet speed.
Instead of getting a separate modem and router, it is better to have one unit that serves both function, a modem-router combo. It helps in a tidy system, provided you are getting all the features of the best modem and the best router, because different brand can be used together.
